How to verify a clothing manufacturer
before you pay a deposit

You have a shortlist. Websites and Alibaba listings are marketing, not proof.

Before you pay a deposit, ask for documents, third-party IDs and something you can see: a visit or a live video of the plant.

Work the checks in order, copy the checklist into a retailer onboarding file, then request the same papers from Top Mondial. How to choose a denim manufacturer is about fit and capability. Supplier credit check is the reverse: the factory checking you.

What a factory website can prove

A site can show a story, photos and a contact form. It cannot prove legal identity, who owns the plant, or that the audit on the homepage is current.

Photos can be stock, or from another factory. Certificates can be expired, for a different legal entity, or for a different site.

Clothing manufacturer verification needs documents you can check with a registrar or an audit platform, plus a visit or a live video of the same address.

Check the legal company, not just the brand name

Get the legal entity name as it will appear on the invoice and contract.

Request a business licence or company registration and, if they export, an export licence. Match the name on those papers to the quote.

Match the factory address on the papers to the building you will visit or see on video. A sales office in another country is not the plant.

Ask who owns the company. Group structures are normal: plants in two countries plus overseas sales offices. Factory due diligence is whether they will name the legal entities, and which plant will cut, sew and wash your order.

Factory or trading company: what the papers should show

A trading company can sit between you and the plant. That is fine if the papers say so. It is a problem when the trader presents itself as the factory. See how we name sites on the factories page.

Factory

You can walk the plant named on the invoice. Certificates name that same entity and site.

on the papers

  • Invoice entity owns or operates the named plant
  • Certificates name that entity and that site

in person

  • They can host a visit or a live walk-through
  • You see cutting, sewing and wash at the stated address

Trading company

The quote names a sales company; the plant, the certificates and the technical answers sit elsewhere.

on the papers

  • Quotes refer to "our partner factory"
  • Certificates belong to a different company

in the room

  • Meetings are only in an office or at a fair
  • Technical answers come back after "checking with the factory"

How to read a factory audit (BSCI, SMETA, WRAP, ISO 9001)

A factory audit describes a named site on a named date. It is not a product certificate.

  • amfori BSCI: a social-compliance programme. A BSCI audit produces a rated report for a site on an audit date, not a product certificate. Check the amfori ID or membership, and that the report is the latest for the plant that will make your order.
  • SMETA / Sedex: a social audit methodology used on Sedex. Ask for the Sedex number and the latest SMETA report or summary.
  • WRAP: a facility social-compliance certification. Ask for the current certificate and the facility it names.
  • ISO 9001: a quality management system at the certified site. It does not prove the quality of your order. Denim quality control and AQL inspection covers how bulk is checked.
What to ask for and check on BSCI, SMETA, WRAP and ISO 9001 factory audits

Many factories share a summary first. Full reports may sit under an NDA. Ask for the latest report or that summary.

Check the amfori ID, Sedex number, certificate expiry, and that the legal name and site address match the quote.

A grade is a snapshot of that date, not a lifetime pass. Last year's rating does not cover this year's site.

Start your project

Proof of capacity, equipment and what is in house

Get a live video walk-through or a visit of the same address as the licence.

Request an equipment list that matches the product. For denim that means sewing, washing and finishing.

Get monthly or annual capacity as a number they will put in writing. Check it against headcount and floor area if they share those.

Ask which processes are in house versus subcontracted. In denim, washing is the process most often sent out. If wash is subcontracted, you need the wash house's audits too.

How jeans are made and custom denim washes explain the process. They do not replace those checks.

How to use customer references without a brand list

Ask for references you can contact. Factories often cannot name brands because of NDAs. That is normal. It is not proof they have no customers.

A "brands we have worked with" page can mean direct production, work through an agent, or a past season. Ask which, and whether the work is current.

Independent audits, inspections and a trial order

Commission a pre-order factory audit or a pre-shipment inspection from an independent firm. The same firms that run SMETA- or BSCI-style work, or inspection houses, can do this.

The cost is time. Booking, site access and a written report typically add days to weeks before you can rely on the result.

A small first order plus samples is also verification. Proto, fit, PP and TOP show whether the factory can hit your spec. See garment sample types and denim sampling explained.

Payment on a first order is usually secured: a deposit, then the balance before shipment. Payment terms explained covers the structures. This is not the factory credit-checking you; that reverse check is supplier credit check.

Red flags

Legal names do not match

The legal name on the quote does not match the licence or the certificate.

No plant address you can see

They will not give a plant address you can visit or see live.

Audit you cannot check

The audit or certificate is expired, is for another site, or they will not share a summary.

Studio photos only

All production photos are studio-only. There is no line, no wash and no people at the stated address.

They cannot answer the plant

They claim to be the factory but cannot answer wash, shrinkage or sampling time without "checking".

Deposit before any proof

They press you to pay a deposit before any papers, video or sample path.

A copyable verification checklist

Copy this into an email or a retailer onboarding file.

  • Legal entity name matches quote, contract and invoice
  • Business licence / registration (and export licence if they export)
  • Factory address matches the licence and the building you saw
  • Ownership / group entities named; which plant will make this order
  • Latest social audit (BSCI, SMETA or WRAP) for that plant, plus amfori ID or Sedex number
  • ISO 9001 (and any other certificates the retailer asks for), names and expiry checked
  • Video or visit of cutting, sewing and wash at that address
  • Capacity figure in writing; in-house vs subcontracted processes named
  • Reference path agreed (contactable reference or a clear NDA explanation)
  • Trial / sample path and deposit terms in writing before you pay
