Private label jeans manufacturing:
how it works for brands

A private label jeans manufacturer makes the jeans, and your brand sells them under its own name, label and packaging.

This guide covers what private label means, how it relates to OEM and ODM, who supplies what, the steps from base style to bulk, labelling, and volume.

What is private label jeans manufacturing?

A factory makes the jeans, and you sell them under your brand. Your name goes on the labels, hangtags and packaging. The factory's name does not.

Your customer sees only your brand, and you do not need to own a factory.

Private label is different from wholesale. In wholesale you buy finished jeans that someone else designed, under their brand or unbranded. For how the two compare on price, MOQ and customisation, read jeans manufacturer vs wholesaler.

The jeans can be a factory style with your branding added, or a design that is entirely yours. Which one you choose is the OEM or ODM question, covered next.

Private label, OEM and ODM: how they fit together

“Private label” describes whose name is on the jeans. OEM and ODM describe who designs them. Both routes end in private label jeans.

Private label through ODM

You start from the factory's existing styles and customise fabric, wash, trims and branding. Top Mondial adds around 1,000 new styles a year.

You provide:

  • Your branding artwork
  • Your choice of style
  • Changes to fabric, wash and trims

Best for:

  • A first collection
  • Launching quickly
  • Lower development cost

Private label through OEM

You supply the design as a tech pack or reference garment, and the factory makes it to your specification.

You provide:

  • A tech pack or reference garment
  • Fit, fabric and wash specification
  • Your branding

Best for:

  • Brands with a design team
  • Full control
  • A signature fit

What your brand supplies and what the factory supplies

A private label order splits the work. Your brand brings the name and the choices. The factory makes the jeans.

Your brand supplies:

  • Brand name and logo artwork
  • Label, hangtag and packaging designs and placements
  • Your choice of base style (ODM), or your tech pack or reference garment (OEM)
  • Fit, fabric and wash choices. See custom denim washes.
  • Quantity, target price and delivery window
  • Approvals at the sample stages

The factory supplies:

  • Pattern and grading
  • Fabric and trim sourcing, through long-term partnerships with more than 20 fabric mills
  • Wash development and sampling
  • Labels, hangtags and retail-ready packing, prepared to your requirements
  • Cutting, sewing, washing, finishing, quality control and packing

For the full comparison, read OEM vs ODM denim manufacturing. If you take the OEM route, read what is a denim tech pack.

From base style to bulk: the private label steps

Once your choices are set, a private label order follows the same factory path as any other order. The diagram below shows it.

Nine steps a denim manufacturer follows from tech pack review to quality control

On the ODM route, the base style you chose, plus your changes, takes the place of your own tech pack at step 01.

The six steps below show where your choices and your branding come in.

1. Choose your route and base style

For the ODM route, pick a base style from our collections. For the OEM route, send a tech pack or reference garment.

Either way, tell us the quantity you have in mind.

2. Set fit, fabric and wash

Decide the fit and size range, the fabric and the wash. On the ODM route these are changes to the base style. On the OEM route they come from your tech pack.

For wash options, read custom denim washes.

3. Brief your branding

Give us the artwork and the placement for your labels, hangtags, back patch, branded hardware, embroidery and packaging.

Put it in writing, in the tech pack or the order spec. The labelling section below covers each item.

4. Sample and approve

It typically takes around 7 days to develop a sample and ship it to you. Check the branding on the sample as well as the fit and wash.

The pre-production sample is made in the bulk fabric and trims. For the rounds and what to check, read denim sampling explained.

5. Confirm the order

Agree the quantity, the price and the delivery window.

For new customers on FOB orders, Top Mondial typically takes a 30% deposit and a 70% balance before shipment. See payment terms explained.

6. Bulk production, quality control and packing

Average bulk lead time is around 30 days. It depends on order size, complexity and materials.

The jeans are cut, sewn, washed, finished, inspected and packed to your requirements. For each stage, read how jeans are made.

Labelling and branding: woven labels, hangtags and packaging

Four things carry your brand to the customer. The factory makes or applies each one to your specification.

  • Woven labels: the main brand label, size labels and care labels. You supply the artwork. You also supply the care and size content for the markets you sell in.
  • Back patch, branded hardware and embroidery: branded buttons and rivets, patches and logo embroidery. Embroidery is done in house.
  • Hangtags: you set the design, the size and how they attach.
  • Packaging: folding, polybags, retail-ready packing and carton marks, prepared to your requirements.

Put every branding spec in the tech pack, or in the order spec for ODM, and check it on the sample. The packaging and labelling section of what is a denim tech pack shows what to include. For materials, custom branding and how trims react to washing, read jeans hardware, trims and branding.

How many pairs do you need for private label jeans?

Private label is factory production, not stock. Each order is made for you, so a minimum order applies. Top Mondial's MOQ is 500 pieces.

When you compare factories, ask how each one counts its MOQ: per style or per colour. Also ask whether custom labels and trims change the minimum.

If your first order is smaller, read jeans manufacturer for startups. To compare factories on MOQ and other points, read how to choose a denim manufacturer.
